Hundreds of other Chinese Orthodox Christians were also murdered during the Boxer Rebellion and are considered martyrs by the church. Other Roman Catholic and Protestant Christian Chinese and foreign missionaries were killed as well. Though there was criticism from the communist government in China when the Roman Catholic Church canonized 120 Chinese and foreign martyrs in October 2000, there was no such criticism of the Orthodox canonizations in August 2000. The lack of criticism was possibly due to the smaller size of the Eastern Orthodox Church, its lower profile in China, or to the lack of tension between the Orthodox Church and the Chinese government.
