Messiah College - The Compassion Forum

The Compassion Forum

The Compassion Forum was a question-and-answer session in which CNN commentators Jon Meacham and Campbell Brown as well as select members of the audience posed questions about Faith and Politics to Democratic political candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. The Forum took place at Messiah College, in Grantham, Pennsylvania on April 13, 2008 and was given live national coverage by CNN. The event was organized by the religious organization Faith in Public Life. John McCain was offered an invitation to participate in the event, but declined the invitation, citing a schedule conflict.

Famous quotes containing the words compassion and/or forum:

It is very difficult to be wholly joyous or wholly sad on this earth. The comic, when it is human, soon takes upon itself a face of pain; and some of our griefs ... have their source in weaknesses which must be recognized with smiling compassion as the common inheritance of us all.
    Joseph Conrad (1857–1924)

What is called eloquence in the forum is commonly found to be rhetoric in the study. The orator yields to the inspiration of a transient occasion, and speaks to the mob before him, to those who can hear him; but the writer, whose more equable life is his occasion, and who would be distracted by the event and the crowd which inspire the orator, speaks to the intellect and heart of mankind, to all in any age who can understand him.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
