Mervin H. Muniz Jr. Memorial Handicap

Mervin H. Muniz Jr. Memorial Handicap is an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually in early March at Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans, Louisiana. A Grade II event since 2001, the race is open to horses age four and older. It is contested on turf over a distance of one and one-eighth miles (nine furlongs).

The race was formerly known as the Explosive Bid Handicap but was renamed for the 2004 edition to honor Mervyn R. Muniz, Jr., a longtime racing secretary at Fair Grounds Race Course who died in 2003.

There was no race in 2006 due to Hurricane Katrina.

Famous quotes containing the words memorial and/or handicap:

When I received this [coronation] ring I solemnly bound myself in marriage to the realm; and it will be quite sufficient for the memorial of my name and for my glory, if, when I die, an inscription be engraved on a marble tomb, saying, “Here lieth Elizabeth, which reigned a virgin, and died a virgin.”
    Elizabeth I (1533–1603)

I have the handicap of being born with a special language to which I alone have the key.
    Gustave Flaubert (1821–1880)
