Merthyr Mawr - Buildings and Landmarks of Note

Buildings and Landmarks of Note

Merthyr Mawr contains several cottages and a parish church, the cottages retaining an authentic, traditional feel with thatched roofs and well maintained gardens. Central to the area is Merthyr Mawr House, an early 19th century mansion built by Sir John Nicholl, and set in an extensive park.

Nearby are the Merthyr Mawr Sand Dunes, where scenes from Lawrence of Arabia were filmed. The River Ogmore flows through the village.

Also two castles, Ogmore Castle and Candleston Castle are within good walking distance. A famous sheep dipping bridge is on the outskirts of the village. The former POW Camp Island Farm is less than a mile away and another village, Ewenny is within 3–4 miles. Mike Young Productions children's cartoon studio is located in Merthyr Mawr.

Famous quotes containing the words buildings, landmarks and/or note:

Now, since our condition accommodates things to itself, and transforms them according to itself, we no longer know things in their reality; for nothing comes to us that is not altered and falsified by our Senses. When the compass, the square, and the rule are untrue, all the calculations drawn from them, all the buildings erected by their measure, are of necessity also defective and out of plumb. The uncertainty of our senses renders uncertain everything that they produce.
    Michel de Montaigne (1533–1592)

Of all the bewildering things about a new country, the absence of human landmarks is one of the most depressing and disheartening.
    Willa Cather (1873–1947)

... if we look around us in social life and note down who are the faithful wives, the most patient and careful mothers, the most exemplary housekeepers, the model sisters, the wisest philanthropists, and the women of the most social influence, we will have to admit that most frequently they are women of cultivated minds, without which even warm hearts and good intentions are but partial influences.
    Mrs. H. O. Ward (1824–1899)
