Melodic Funk - History

History

DJ Marlboro's radio show "Big Mix", broadcast since the 80s, has popularised a soft version of the underground baile funk songs. These soft versions formed a romantic sub-genre called melodic funk in Brazil, adding melodies and arrangements to the raw, beat-y funk tunes. Another artist famously known to explore and mix hip-hop and maracatu rhythm with techno beats, Chico Science. Before his death in 1997, he founded the rock band Nação Zumbi (Zumbi Nation) Some would say their music inspired the reinvention of Brazil's traditional music scene toward a more funk/hip-hop democratic scene in the late seventies and early eighties.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

Let us not underrate the value of a fact; it will one day flower in a truth. It is astonishing how few facts of importance are added in a century to the natural history of any animal. The natural history of man himself is still being gradually written.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

In all history no class has been enfranchised without some selfish motive underlying. If to-day we could prove to Republicans or Democrats that every woman would vote for their party, we should be enfranchised.
    Carrie Chapman Catt (1859–1947)

Philosophy of science without history of science is empty; history of science without philosophy of science is blind.
    Imre Lakatos (1922–1974)
