Meiosis in Plants and Animals
Meiosis occurs in all animals and plants. The end result, the production of gametes for sexual reproduction, is the same but the process is slightly different. In animals, meiosis is used to produce gametes directly. In most plants, meiosis is first used to produce haploid spores. These spores multiply by mitosis, developing into gametophytes, which eventually give rise to gametes. In the end, both animals and plants produce gametes with half the number of chromosomes as the parent cell.
