History

The Mahsuds, along with the Wazirs, originally lived in the Birmal area of Afghanistan. In the later 14th century, they migrated eastwards, and fell into dispute with the Banusi and Khattak tribe of the Afghans settled in the Shawal area. The Mahsuds and the Wazirs succeeded to defeat the Khattaks and pushed them northeastwards towards Bannu and Kohat. Eventually, the Mahsuds settled at the center of Waziristan, in the Makeen, Kaniguram and Lada area. Some of the Mahsud lineages settled in the Logar Valley of Afghanistan.

During the British colonial period, the Mahsuds were invaded several times by the British Raj, in 1860, 1881, 1894-5, 1900-1, 1919-20 and in 1925.

... in a history of spiritual rupture, a social compact built on fantasy and collective secrets, poetry becomes more necessary than ever: it keeps the underground aquifers flowing; it is the liquid voice that can wear through stone.
    Adrienne Rich (b. 1929)

Man watches his history on the screen with apathy and an occasional passing flicker of horror or indignation.
