McMillan & Wife - Cast and Series Name Change

Cast and Series Name Change

Due to a contract dispute between Saint James and the studio, the character of Sally (and their never seen, sometimes mentioned son) was killed off in an airplane crash during the fifth season. With one of the main characters missing, the show was retooled and renamed McMillan. Other cast changes included the departure of the Mildred character who left Mac's employment to run a diner (actress Nancy Walker left to star in her own sitcom but the "diner" reference was an inside joke meant to evoke her then-popular commercials on behalf of Bounty paper towels). Mac also got a new apartment and a new housekeeper, Agatha (Martha Raye), who was Mildred's sister as well as a new police aide, Sgt. DiMaggio (Richard Gilliland), as Schuck also left for his own series. The new format was not a success and McMillan was cancelled after six episodes were broadcast.

Famous quotes containing the words cast, series and/or change:

The old man had heard that there was a wreck and knew most of the particulars, but he said that he had not been up there since it happened. It was the wrecked weed that concerned him most ... and those bodies were to him but other weeds which the tide cast up, but which were of no use to him.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Every Age has its own peculiar faith.... Any attempt to translate into facts the mission of one Age with the machinery of another, can only end in an indefinite series of abortive efforts. Defeated by the utter want of proportion between the means and the end, such attempts might produce martyrs, but never lead to victory.
    Giuseppe Mazzini (1805–1872)

Suddenly I’m dogmatic. Why does my status change every time you get a new woman, Jack?
    Warren Beatty (b. 1937)
