Mayfair Salad Dressing

Mayfair salad dressing is an egg-based salad dressing created at the Mayfair Hotel in downtown St. Louis.

Mayfair salad dressing is made from an oil (such as corn or canola) and whole egg base seasoned with anchovies, garlic, prepared mustard (horseradish mustard may be used), celery, onion, champagne, and black peppercorns. Sometimes glutamate is also used.

The Mayfair hotel was built in 1925 and stands at 806 Saint Charles Street in St. Louis city. Noted guests were Irving Berlin, Cary Grant, and Harry Truman.

Famous quotes containing the words salad and/or dressing:

    My salad days,
    When I was green in judgment, cold in blood,
    To say as I said then!
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

    His talk was like a spring, which runs
    With rapid change from rocks to roses:
    It slipped from politics to puns,
    It passed from Mahomet to Moses;
    Beginning with the laws which keep
    The planets in their radiant courses,
    And ending with some precept deep
    For dressing eels, or shoeing horses.
    Winthrop Mackworth Praed (1802–1839)
