Overview

The book is generally divided between the "present" frame tale, in 1978–79 in Rego Park, New York, in which Spiegelman interviews his father, Vladek, and the "past", the story that Vladek tells, beginning in the mid-1930s and continuing through the end of the Holocaust in 1945, when Vladek and his wife Anja emigrate to the US. Spiegelman has a strained relationship with his father, who harasses and infuriates his neighbors and loved ones.
