Text
The original Koine Greek, according to Westcott and Hort, reads:
- του δε χριστου η γενεσις ουτως
- ην μνηστευθεισης της μητρος αυτου μαριας
- τω ιωσηφ πριν η συνελθειν αυτους ευρεθη
- εν γαστρι εχουσα εκ πνευματος αγιου
In the King James Version of the Bible the text reads:
- Now the birth of Jesus Christ was
- on this wise: When as his mother
- Mary was espoused to Joseph, before
- they came together, she was found
- with child of the Holy Ghost.
The World English Bible translates the passage as:
- Now the birth of Jesus Christ was
- like this; for after his mother,
- Mary, was engaged to Joseph,
- before they came together, she was
- found pregnant by the Holy Spirit.

Famous quotes containing the word text:
“I would define the poetic effect as the capacity that a text displays for continuing to generate different readings, without ever being completely consumed.”
—Umberto Eco (b. 1932)
“Great speeches have always had great soundbites. The problem now is that the young technicians who put together speeches are paying attention only to the soundbite, not to the text as a whole, not realizing that all great soundbites happen by accident, which is to say, all great soundbites are yielded up inevitably, as part of the natural expression of the text. They are part of the tapestry, they arent a little flower somebody sewed on.”
—Peggy Noonan (b. 1950)
“I am so glad you have been able to preserve the text in all of its impurity.”
—Samuel Beckett (19061989)
