Matt Pike - History

History

Pike moved to California after spending time in Military School while living with his mother in Golden, Colorado. A self-proclaimed juvenile delinquent, he stole car stereos to feed a developing drug habit. Arriving in the Silicon Valley, he realized the hardcore punk and heavy metal scene more active than the one in Denver. He made friends, attended shows, and eventually joined the sludge metal band Asbestosdeath. When playing around the Bay Area they developed a much heavier and slower sound. Dubbed doom metal by the press, the quartet soon gained a following and changed their name to Sleep.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

It’s a very delicate surgical operation—to cut out the heart without killing the patient. The history of our country, however, is a very tough old patient, and we’ll do the best we can.
Dudley Nichols, U.S. screenwriter. Jean Renoir. Sorel (Philip Merivale)

The history of modern art is also the history of the progressive loss of art’s audience. Art has increasingly become the concern of the artist and the bafflement of the public.
    Henry Geldzahler (1935–1994)

The greatest horrors in the history of mankind are not due to the ambition of the Napoleons or the vengeance of the Agamemnons, but to the doctrinaire philosophers. The theories of the sentimentalist Rousseau inspired the integrity of the passionless Robespierre. The cold-blooded calculations of Karl Marx led to the judicial and business-like operations of the Cheka.
    Aleister Crowley (1875–1947)
