Matt Deis - Early Life

Early Life

Deis lived in New Hampshire until the age of four until his family moved to West Springfield, Massachusetts. He has been involved with music since he was very young. He has played the piano ever since he was five years old, and picked up the clarinet in elementary school. By the time he got to junior high school, he begged his parents for a guitar and started his first band, Nameless Fear. He played in Nameless Fear from the ages of thirteen to seventeen. He eventually left to play bass guitar for the band Lost Inside a Rubix Cube (who later changed their name to The Amber Fashion). This all came about after Matt took the lead singer Adam on a date to Wendys. Matt started taking guitar lessons from the lead guitar player of All That Remains, and eventually started playing bass for the band. During his time in All That Remains, Deis co-wrote and played bass on their album This Darkened Heart. Tours with bands such as Gwar, Slipknot, As I Lay Dying, and Killswitch Engage followed.

Deis cites Rudy Sarzo, Marcus Miller, Paul McCartney, Stanley Clarke, Billy Gould, and Sting as his main influences. He also holds a degree in Music Performance from Holyoke Community College in Holyoke, Massachusetts.

Famous quotes containing the words early and/or life:

I taught school in the early days of my manhood and I think I know something about mothers. There is a thread of aspiration that runs strong in them. It is the fiber that has formed the most unselfish creatures who inhabit this earth. They want three things only; for their children to be fed, to be healthy, and to make the most of themselves.
    Lyndon Baines Johnson (1908–1973)

Music is of two kinds: one petty, poor, second-rate, never varying, its base the hundred or so phrasings which all musicians understand, a babbling which is more or less pleasant, the life that most composers live.
    HonorĂ© De Balzac (1799–1850)
