Mathematical Descriptions of The Electromagnetic Field - Potential Field Approach

Potential Field Approach

Many times in the use and calculation of electric and magnetic fields, the approach used first computes an associated potential: the electric potential, V, for the electric field, and the magnetic potential, A, for the magnetic field. The electric potential is a scalar field, while the magnetic potential is a vector field. This is why sometimes the electric potential is called the scalar potential and the magnetic potential is called the vector potential. These potentials can be used to find their associated fields as follows:

Famous quotes containing the words potential, field and/or approach:

Not many appreciate the ultimate power and potential usefulness of basic knowledge accumulated by obscure, unseen investigators who, in a lifetime of intensive study, may never see any practical use for their findings but who go on seeking answers to the unknown without thought of financial or practical gain.
    Eugenie Clark (b. 1922)

It is through attentive love, the ability to ask “What are you going through?” and the ability to hear the answer that the reality of the child is both created and respected.
    —Mary Field Belenky (20th century)

I approach these questions unwillingly, as it wounds, but no cure can be effected without touching upon and handling them.
    Titus Livius (Livy)
