Math, Science, and Technology Center

The Math, Science, and Technology Center, also known as MSTC (Lexington, KY), is a prestigious magnet program housed in Lexington, Kentucky's Paul Laurence Dunbar High School. It draws students from throughout the Fayette County Public Schools district. Since the program's establishment in 1991, it has produced 61 National Merit Finalists. It has an average ACT score of 31 and an average SAT score of 1400. 14 MSTC students have scored a perfect 1600 on the SAT, and 8 MSTC students have scored a perfect 36 on the ACT. One student has scored a perfect score on both. MSTC graduates are offered an average of five scholarships from different schools, and have attended 20 of the top 30 universities and colleges in the country, as ranked by US News and World Report.

Students are selected for the program based on their scores for a logic and reasoning test as well as a simple algebra word problem. Before 2010, sixty students were separated out from the group and the top 40 were immediately selected for matriculation into the program and the remaining twenty were placed on a waiting list. However, due to a large volume of incoming freshmen, the program now selects 55 students from a field of the top 65. Although it is natural for some students to turn down admission to the program due to extenuating circumstances rarely will more than 5 students from the waiting list matriculate into the program.

The successor to politics will be propaganda. Propaganda, not in the sense of a message or ideology, but as the impact of the whole technology of the times.
    Marshall McLuhan (1911–1980)

Death is someone you see very clearly with eyes in the center of your heart: eyes that see not by reacting to light, but by reacting to a kind of a chill from within the marrow of your own life.
    Thomas Merton (1915–1968)
