In Malaysia
MPhil is not very famous in Malaysia. However, this program is currently being offered by universities such as Universiti Malaya (Public University), Wawasan Open University (Private University) and others. If the desired field of research does not belong to any of the specialized faculties, it is normally categorized under the MPhil supervised by the Postgraduate Institute (as is true for Univesiti Malaya). However, if the candidates do not wish to take a Master's program with a coursework mode, then Wawasan Open University will help these people to further their studies by conducting a research-only degree in a selected field. Certain universities will confer the degree as, for example, MPhil (English Studies), with a specialized field in the bracket, while other universities do not do so. In Malaysia an MPhil is normally available only for Arts and Humanities subjects. It is very rare that this degree is available for any technical subjects nor supplanting Master of Science etc.
