He played centre half for the Welsh YMCA U16 football side. He stated his intentions to play for the Cardiff Blues for another couple of seasons before taking up a career in commercial banking.
Williams is affiliated with the charity Cancer Care Cymru.
Williams was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2012 New Year Honours for services to rugby. In July 2012, Williams was made an honorary fellow of Cardiff University.
