Mark Williams (Holby City)

Mark Williams (Holby City)

Mark Williams is a fictional character from the BBC medical drama Holby City, portrayed by actor Robert Powell. The character first appeared on-screen on 15 February 2005 in episode "Stick or Twist" - series seven, episode eighteen of the programme. Mark was created as a new addition to the show's existing Williams family, entering as the ex-husband and father of established characters Tricia and Chrissie Williams respectively. Powell stated that he was looking forward to the opportunity to develop the character over a longer period of time than with the briefer acting roles he was more used to taking.

The character's major storylines have centered on his relationship with his family, seeing him reunited with ex-wife Tricia, only to be rocked by the revelation that she had once been raped by his own father, meaning his daughter Chrissie was actually his biological sister. Although the two were able to put the past behind them and remarry, Tricia was killed in a road traffic accident in 2006, and Mark has since struggled to cope without her, succumbing to a cocaine addiction in 2007. This particular storyline was criticised for its surrealism in the media, although the character has been well received by fans of the show.

The character left Holby after resigning his position as CEO on 25 January 2011 in episode "Don't Go Changing" - series thirteen.

Each writer is born with a repertory company in his head. Shakespeare has perhaps 20 players, and Tennessee Williams has about 5, and Samuel Beckett one—and maybe a clone of that one. I have 10 or so, and that’s a lot. As you get older, you become more skillful at casting them.
