Democratic Chair of State Government Committee

On December 19, 2012, Democratic Leader Frank Dermody and House Speaker Samuel H. Smith (politician) announced his appointment for the 2013-2014 legislative session as Democratic Chairman of the Pennsylvania House State Government Committee. Allentown Morning Call reporter John Micek promptly warned that the pairing of Cohen with Republican Majority Chair Daryl Metcalfe, whose very conservative views were strongly opposed to Cohen's on many issues, would be "thermonuclear."

Famous quotes containing the words democratic, chair, state, government and/or committee:

    It is the American vice, the democratic disease which expresses its tyranny by reducing everything unique to the level of the herd.
    Henry Miller (1891–1980)

    This stable is a Prince’s court.
    This crib His chair of state;
    The beasts are parcel of His pomp,
    The wooden dish His plate.
    Robert Southwell (1561?–1595)

    Hast ever ben in Omaha
    Where rolls the dark Missouri down,
    Where four strong horses scarce can draw
    An empty wagon through the town?
    Where sand is blown from every mound
    To fill your eyes and ears and throat;
    Where all the steamboats are aground,
    And all the houses are afloat?...
    If not, take heed to what I say,
    You’ll find it just as I have found it;
    And if it lies upon your way
    For God’s sake, reader, go around it!
    —For the State of Nebraska, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)

    The dignity and stability of government in all its branches, the morals of the people, and every blessing of society, depend so much upon an upright and skilful administration of justice, that the judicial power ought to be distinct from both the legislative and executive, and independent upon both, that so it may be a check upon both, as both should be checks upon that.
    Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826)

    The cemetery isn’t really a place to make a statement.
    Mary Elizabeth Baker, U.S. cemetery committee head. As quoted in Newsweek magazine, p. 15 (June 13, 1988)
