  • 2012 Carlos Fuentes International Prize for Literary Creation in the Spanish Language
  • In 2004, Vargas Llosa was invited to serve as a mentor for the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative, an international philanthropic programme that pairs masters in their disciplines with emerging talents for a year of one-to-one creative exchange. Out of a very gifted field of candidates, Vargas Llosa chose young Colombian novelist Antonio Garcia Ángel as his protégé. Other literature mentors for the initiative include Toni Morrison (2002), Tahar Ben Jelloun (2006), Wole Soyinka (2008), Hans Magnus Enzensberger (2010) and Margaret Atwood (2012).
