Mariamman - Goddess of Disease

Goddess of Disease

Mariamman cures all so-called "heat-based" diseases like pox and rashes. During the summer months in South India (March to June), people walk miles carrying pots of water mixed with turmeric and neem leaves to ward off illnesses like the measles and chicken pox. In this way, goddess Māri is very similar to North Indian goddess Shitala Devi.

Famous quotes containing the words goddess of, goddess and/or disease:

The Moon! Artemis! the great goddess of the splendid past of men! Are you going to tell me she is a dead lump?
    —D.H. (David Herbert)

Men who care passionately for women attach themselves at least as much to the temple and to the accessories of the cult as to their goddess herself.
    Marguerite Yourcenar (1903–1987)

Man is an exception, whatever else he is. If he is not the image of God, then he is a disease of the dust. If it is not true that a divine being fell, then we can only say that one of the animals went entirely off its head.
    Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874–1936)
