Galveston and City of Houston
After the wedding ceremony the newlyweds spent their honeymoon week at the Lafayette Hotel in Marion, Alabama, while Margaret recovered from an illness that arose shortly after the nuptials. They then boarded the ship New York to Galveston, joined by Margaret's slave Eliza. Nancy Lea had established a residence in Galveston and joined the local Baptist church. Margaret and Eliza shared Lea's house while Sam traveled on business.
Sam owned a rental residence in the city of Houston, but Margaret found she did not like living in a city with so much activity. She returned to her mother's home in Galveston.
