Margaret Bushby Lascelles Cockburn

Margaret Bushby Lascelles Cockburn (1829–1928) was an artist and amateur ornithologist who lived in the Nilgiris in India. She was born in Salem, India and her father was the Collector of the District, M. D. Cockburn. She made numerous observations on local natural history and many of these were reported in the works of Allan Octavian Hume. She also made paintings of the local birds and flora. The Natural history museum at London produced a diary in 2002 with illustrations made by her of the fauna and flora of the Kotagiri region.

She contributed towards the construction of a church at Kotagiri in 1867. A subspecies of Anthus similis from the Nilgiri region was named after her, but this no longer considered valid.

Sometimes we can’t avoid giving pain, even to friends.
—Kenneth Langtry. Herbert L. Strock. Margaret (Phyllis Coates)

Next week Reagan will probably announce that American scientists have discovered that the entire U.S. agricultural surplus can be compacted into a giant tomato one thousand miles across, which will be suspended above the Kremlin from a cluster of U.S. satellites flying in geosynchronous orbit. At the first sign of trouble the satellites will drop the tomato on the Kremlin, drowning the fractious Muscovites in ketchup.
    —Alexander Cockburn (b. 1941)
