Manuel Maria Coelho

Manuel Maria Coelho (1857–1943) was a Portuguese military officer of the Portuguese Army and politician during the period of the Portuguese First Republic. (In January 1891, he had been one of the leading revolutionaries during the Porto republican revolt.) Among other posts, he served as governor of Portuguese Angola and governor of Portuguese Guinea. He became Prime Minister after the Noite Sangrenta (Bloody Night) terrorist assassinations of prominent state figures (including Prime Minister António Granjo) on 19 October 1921. A Freemason (like many of his colleagues), he was co-author, along with João Chagas, of the work História da Revolta do Porto (History of the Porto Revolt).

Famous quotes containing the words manuel and/or maria:

And Manuel embraced his mother and they laughed together: Délira’s laugh sounded surprisingly young; that was because she hadn’t really had the chance to make it heard; life was just not happy enough for that. No, she never had time to use it; she had kept it fresh as can be, like a birdsong in an old nest.
    Jacques Roumain (1907–1945)

Kidd Dabb: The boat doesn’t stop at Santa Maria this trip.
    Geoff Carter: Why not?
    Kidd: They have no bananas.
    Geoff: They have no bananas?
Kidd: Yes, they have no bananas.
    Jules Furthman (1888–1960)
