Manhattan Center for Science and Mathematics (also known as MCSM) is a public high school in New York City, at East 116th Street between Pleasant Avenue and FDR Drive in the East Harlem neighborhood in the north-eastern part of the borough of Manhattan.

Established in 1982 to replace Benjamin Franklin High School, Manhattan Center is presently a four-year high school which provides students with a rigorous curriculum that emphasizes mathematics and science. Like all New York City high schools, admission is by application. Admission priority for Manhattan Center is given first to students attending the Isaac Newton Junior High School, which shares the campus with Manhattan Center; second to students residing in District 4; and then to other residents city-wide.

The academic performance of this school is extremely high, as measured by New York State Regents Examinations scores, scholarship rates and a 95% graduation rate. MCSM is consistently one of the highest performing schools in the State of New York. In 2007, David Jimenez became the Principal. In 2009, MCSM graduated 97% of its students.

Students graduating from Manhattan Center have attended colleges and universities such as Amherst College, Brown University, Harvard University, Cornell University, Columbia University, Barnard College, Carnegie Mellon University, Bryn Mawr College, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Wesleyan University, Yale University, Morehouse College, Temple University, Trinity College, John Hopkins University, the University at Buffalo, Howard University, Macaulay Honors College and many others around the country.

The curriculum includes AP courses and special programs, as well as research and internship opportunities.

Famous quotes containing the words center, science and/or mathematics:

Columbus stood in his age as the pioneer of progress and enlightenment. The system of universal education is in our age the most prominent and salutary feature of the spirit of enlightenment, and it is peculiarly appropriate that the schools be made by the people the center of the day’s demonstration. Let the national flag float over every schoolhouse in the country and the exercises be such as shall impress upon our youth the patriotic duties of American citizenship.
    Benjamin Harrison (1833–1901)

It is unheard-of, uncivilized barbarism that any woman should still be forced to bear such monstrous torture. It should be remedied. It should be stopped. It is simply absurd that, with our modern science, painless childbirth does not exist as a matter of course.... I tremble with indignation when I think of ... the unspeakable egotism and blindness of men of science who permit such atrocities when they can be remedied.
    Isadora Duncan (1878–1927)

It is a monstrous thing to force a child to learn Latin or Greek or mathematics on the ground that they are an indispensable gymnastic for the mental powers. It would be monstrous even if it were true.
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)
