Malt Loaf - Variants in Other Countries

Variants in Other Countries

In December and during the holiday season, a similar type of bread called vörtbröd (literally wort bread) is very popular in Sweden. The dough's water is replaced by beer wort adding sweetness and flavor to the bread. Several different spices and fruits commonly associated with Christmas are also added, e.g. cloves, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom and raisins. It is often the bread of choice in the sop called dopp i grytan (dip in the pot) popularly eaten on Christmas Eve.

Famous quotes containing the words variants and/or countries:

Nationalist pride, like other variants of pride, can be a substitute for self-respect.
    Eric Hoffer (1902–1983)

Fame sometimes hath created something out of nothing. She hath made whole countries more than nature ever did, especially near the poles, and then hath peopled them likewise with inhabitants of her own invention, pigmies, giants, and amazons: yea, fame is sometimes like unto a mushroom, which Pliny recounts to be the greatest miracle in nature, because growing and having no root, as fame no ground of her reports.
    Thomas Fuller (1608–1661)
