Beginning in July 2010, the Malone Pioneers were granted three year exploratory membership to the NCAA Division II. As a provisional member of the NCAA Division II, Malone is not eligible to compete in post-season play. Should Malone meet all requirements by the end of their provisional membership in 2012, the Pioneers will qualify for full membership in the NCAA Division II, thus making them eligible for NCAA sponsored, sanctioned tournaments.

In October 2011, Malone was accepted as a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for all 18 intercollegiate athletic programs. Prior to Malone's provisional NCAA Division II membership, the Pioneers participated in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the American Mideast Conference. For football, the school competed in the Mid-States Football Association until the university's second year of NCAA candidacy in the 2011-2012 academic school year. Full membership in the NCAA Division II is expected by the fall of 2013.
