Malolos Cathedral - The Kalayaan Tree

The Kalayaan Tree

The Kalayaan Tree (Siar) is located in the patio of the Cathedral. Based on certain reports, it is not certain that Aguinaldo planted this tree because it is already matured Siar tree when the First Philippine Republic were established. The historical significance of this tree is that of a living witness to the Malolos Republic. Aguinaldo and his Cabinet have conducted many political discussions there. Under the tree is a monument that symbolizes the meeting of Filipino revolutionaries represented by Gregorio del Pilar and Gen. Isidoro Torres; Don Pablo Tecson, an erudite legislator; Padre Mariano Sevilla, a nationalist leader of the church and Doña Basilia Tantoco, portraying a woman freedom fighter.

What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure.
