Mainland Premier League

The Mainland Premier League or Robbie's Premier Football League for sponsorship reasons is a semi-professional status league competition run by Mainland Football for association football clubs located in the northern half of the South Island, New Zealand.

The 2010 Mainland Football top tier League was named Matson's Premier Football League due to the sponsorship agreements with the New Zealand Beverage company Matson's Brewery. As of 2011 the Mainland Football top tier football competition has been named the Robbie's Premier Football League with a 1 year sponsorship agreement with the New Zealand Beverage and Food restaurant chain company Robbie's Bar & Bistro. This sponsorship was extended for the 2012 season as well. When Woolston Technical and Cashmere Wanderers merged in early 2012 to form Cashmere Technical they replaced the Woolston side that finished 6th in the 2011 competition.

It is currently regarded as the strongest football league in the South Island of New Zealand and features current and former ASB Premiership players. On 21 July 2012 it was confirmed that Nomads United would be promoted from back up to the premier league from the Mainland Division One competition, after being relegated in the 2011 competition. There have been speculation that a ten team league will be seen in the near future but nothing has been confirmed by the league administrator, Mainland Football.

In the 2012 season, Christchurch United were relegated from the league after a season long relegation battle with FC Twenty Eleven. Nomads United, who won the Division One title have been promoted back up to the Premier League. Coastal Spirit have been rumoured to switch venues for the 2013 season from Linfield Park to ASB Football Park

Famous quotes containing the word league:

Stereotypes fall in the face of humanity. You toodle along, thinking that all gay men wear leather after dark and should never, ever be permitted around a Little League field. And then one day your best friend from college, the one your kids adore, comes out to you.
