Maine Road - Pitch

Pitch

For long periods of its history Maine Road had the widest pitch in England. However, the width was changed several times by managers wishing to alter the pitch size to suit their style of play. In the final season before the ground was closed, the pitch size was 107 x 71 metres (116.5 x 78 yards). Maine Road's replacement, the City of Manchester Stadium has maintained this tradition of having a large pitch.

Famous quotes containing the word pitch:

Though I have locked my gate on them
    I pity all the young,
I know what devil’s trade they learn
    From those they live among,
Their drink, their pitch and toss by day,
    Their robbery by night....
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)

People do not know the natural infirmity of their mind: it does nothing but ferret and quest, and keeps incessantly whirling around, building up and becoming entangled in its own work, like our silkworms, and is suffocated in it: a mouse in a pitch barrel.
    Michel de Montaigne (1533–1592)

    I saw the Arab map.
It resembled a mare shuffling on,
    dragging its history like saddlebags,
nearing its tomb and the pitch of hell.
Adonis [Ali Ahmed Said] (b. 1930)
