Greek-Catholic Hungarians

According to the 2001-census there are 268,935 Greek-Catholic Christians living in Hungary. With the exception of a few thousand Romanians and Rusyns, most are today ethnically and linguistically effectively Hungarians. Most of the Greek-Catholic Hungarians have Rusyn and Romanian ancestors. The Hungarian Greek-Catholic diocese of Hajdudorog was founded in 1912. At that time, the diocese promoted the replacement of the Rusyn and Romanian liturgies with Hungarian equivalents. Today, the seat of the diocese is in Nyíregyháza.
