Magnetic Prandtl Number

The Magnetic Prandtl number is a dimensionless quantity occurring in magnetohydrodynamics which approximates the ratio of momentum diffusivity (viscosity) and magnetic diffusivity. It is defined as:

where:

  • is the magnetic Reynolds number
  • is the Reynolds number
  • is the momentum diffusivity (kinematic viscosity)
  • is the magnetic diffusivity

At the base of the Sun's convection zone the Magnetic Prandtl number is approximately, and in the interiors of planets and in liquid-metal laboratory dynamos is approximately .

Famous quotes containing the words magnetic and/or number:

We are in great haste to construct a magnetic telegraph from Maine to Texas; but Maine and Texas, it may be, have nothing important to communicate.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

The serial number of a human specimen is the face, that accidental and unrepeatable combination of features. It reflects neither character nor soul, nor what we call the self. The face is only the serial number of a specimen.
    Milan Kundera (b. 1929)
