In The British Army
After his high-school graduation, Joseph got a job in the British Army in Pune as a civilian clerk. During the training period, while on sentry guard duty with a rifle in his hand, a thought went through his mind, “Here I am serving His Majesty the King of England as one of his loyal soldiers. Famous quotes containing the words british and/or army:
“I ... would rather be in dependance on Great Britain, properly limited, than on any nation upon earth, or than on no nation. But I am one of those too who rather than submit to the right of legislating for us assumed by the British parliament, and which late experience has shewn they will so cruelly exercise, would lend my hand to sink the whole island in the ocean.”
—Thomas Jefferson (17431826)
“Methinks it would be some advantage to philosophy if men were named merely in the gross, as they are known. It would be necessary only to know the genus and perhaps the race or variety, to know the individual. We are not prepared to believe that every private soldier in a Roman army had a name of his own, because we have not supposed that he had a character of his own.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
