Luminosity - Scattering Theory - Elementary Relations For Luminosity

Elementary Relations For Luminosity

The following relations hold

(if the target is perfectly opaque)

where

is the (instantaneous) luminosity.
is the integrated luminosity.
is the number of interactions.
is the number density of a particle beam.
is the total cross section.
is the differential solid angle.
is the differential cross section.

For an intersecting storage ring collider:

where

is the revolution frequency
is the number of bunches in one beam in the storage ring.
is the number of particles in each bunch
is the cross section of the beam.

Famous quotes containing the words elementary and/or relations:

Listen. We converse as we live—by repeating, by combining and recombining a few elements over and over again just as nature does when of elementary particles it builds a world.
    William Gass (b. 1924)

Subject the material world to the higher ends by understanding it in all its relations to daily life and action.
    Ellen Henrietta Swallow Richards (1842–1911)
