He was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 10th round of the 2002 Major League Baseball Draft and signed his first pro contract on June 18 of the same year and played for the Oneonta Tigers in the New York-Penn League before being released by the Tigers on March 2003. Carlin, as well as teammates Jesse Carlson and Everett Hancock, took part in a rap in which they were accused of "sexual harassment". Hancock said of Carlin, that he “said something about sleeping with wife last year at Oneonta during the nightlife.” Ready was the teammates' manager at Oneonta.
