Lucilla - Rise of Commodus

Rise of Commodus

In 172, Lucilla and Quintianus accompanied Marcus Aurelius to Vienna in support of the Danube military campaign. They were with him until March 17, 180, when her father died and Commodus became the new emperor. The change in Emperors meant any hope of Lucilla again becoming Empress was lost while her brother reigned, and she and Quintianus returned to Rome.

Lucilla was not happy living the quiet life of a private citizen in Rome, and hated her sister-in-law Bruttia Crispina. Over time, Lucilla became very concerned with her brother Commodus' unstable behaviour and its resulting effect on the stability of the empire.

Famous quotes containing the words rise of and/or rise:

Creation destroys as it goes, throws down one tree for the rise of another. But ideal mankind would abolish death, multiply itself million upon million, rear up city upon city, save every parasite alive, until the accumulation of mere existence is swollen to a horror.
    —D.H. (David Herbert)

Considered physiologically, everything ugly weakens and saddens man. It reminds him of decay, danger, impotence; it actually reduces his strength. The effect of ugliness can be measured with a dynamometer. Whenever anyone feels depressed, he senses the proximity of something “ugly.” His feeling of power, his will to power, his courage, his pride—they decline with ugliness, they rise with beauty.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)
