Famous quotes containing the words abolition, revival and/or office:

There is but little virtue in the action of masses of men. When the majority shall at length vote for the abolition of slavery, it will be because they are indifferent to slavery, or because there is but little slavery left to be abolished by their vote. They will then be the only slaves. Only his vote can hasten the abolition of slavery who asserts his own freedom by his vote.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

I do not think a revival of business will be greatly postponed by [Samuel J.] Tilden’s election. Business prosperity does not, in my judgment, depend on government so much as men commonly think.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)

This century fulfills the office of road-laborer for the society of the future. We make the road, others will make the journey.
    Victor Hugo (1802–1885)
