Lopez Adobe - Purchase By The City of San Fernando

Purchase By The City of San Fernando

The City of San Fernando announced plans to purchase the property from the Lopez family in 1970, but took more than a year to come up with the $70,000 purchase price. Plans to obtain a HUD grant fell through, and in early 1971, the owners imposed a deadline on the purchase, and indicated the building would be razed and the land cleared. When the adobe was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in May 1971, HUD finally agreed to provide a $40,000 historical preservation grant, and the purchase was completed in late 1971.

Famous quotes containing the words purchase, city and/or san:

    Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
    O what a foretaste of glory divine!
    Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
    born of the Spirit, washed in Christ’s blood.
    Fanny J. Crosby (1820–1915)

    The city sleeps and the country sleeps,
    The living sleep for their time, the dead sleep for their time,
    The old husband sleeps by his wife and the young husband sleeps by his wife;
    And these tend inward to me, and I tend outward to them,
    And such as it is to be of these more or less I am,
    And of these one and all I weave the song of myself.
    Walt Whitman (1819–1892)

    The gold-digger in the ravines of the mountains is as much a gambler as his fellow in the saloons of San Francisco. What difference does it make whether you shake dirt or shake dice? If you win, society is the loser.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
