Longwell Green is a suburb just outside the east fringe of Bristol. It is located within the traditional county of Gloucestershire and the unitary authority of South Gloucestershire (previously Avon). It lies along the A431 Bath Road, near the river Avon at grid reference ST658710.

Until relatively recently this was a small rural community but this changed in 1977 when 1.62 km² of land were developed for housing and businesses as part of Bristol's recent rapid expansion.

The centre of Longwell Green, and the site of the original village, is based along a stretch of the A431 Bath Road. The A431 is a Roman road and runs from Bath to Bristol. Longwell Green sits five miles (8 km) from Bristol and seven miles (11 km) from Bath.

Famous quotes containing the words green, community and/or centre:

    When I am dead, my dearest, Sing no sad songs for me;
    Plant thou no roses at my head, Nor shady cypress tree:
    Be the green grass above me With showers and dewdrops wet;
    And if thou wilt, remember, And if thou wilt, forget.
    Christina Georgina Rossetti (1830–1894)

    When you have come into the land that the LORD your God is giving you, and have taken possession of it and settled in it, and you say, “I will set a king over me, like all the nations that are around me,” you may indeed set over you a king whom the LORD your God will choose. One of your own community you may set as king over you; you are not permitted to put a foreigner over you, who is not of your own community.
    Bible: Hebrew, Deuteronomy 17:14,15.

    Old politicians, like old actors, revive in the limelight. The vacancy which afflicts them in private momentarily lifts when, once more, they feel the eyes of an audience upon them. Their old passion for holding the centre of the stage guides their uncertain footsteps to where the footlights shine, and summons up a wintry smile when the curtain rises.
    Malcolm Muggeridge (1903–1990)
