    “The Greeks used to say,” he said bitterly, using a phrase that had been a long time on his mind, “that when a man became a slave, on the first day he lost one-half of his virtue.”
    John Dos Passos (1896–1970)

    ... we have every reason to rejoice when there are so many gains and when favorable conditions abound on every hand. The end is not yet in sight, but it can not be far away. The road before us is shorter than the road behind.
    Lucy Stone (1818–1893)

    If you are willing to inconvenience yourself in the name of discipline, the battle is half over. Leave Grandma’s early if the children are acting impossible. Depart the ballpark in the sixth inning if you’ve warned the kids and their behavior is still poor. If we do something like this once, our kids will remember it for a long time.
    Fred G. Gosman (20th century)

    The Divine Vision still was seen,
    Still was the human form divine
    Weeping in weak & mortal clay;
    O Jesus, still the form was thine!
    William Blake (1757–1827)

    Training is everything. The peach was once a bitter almond; cauliflower is nothing but cabbage with a college education.
    Mark Twain [Samuel Langhorne Clemens] (1835–1910)
