Long Beach Police Department (New York) - History

History

The Long Beach Police Department, commonly referred to by the acronym LBPD, has been serving the Long Beach, Lido Beach, Point Lookout, and East Atlantic Beach communities since 1911. The Department has several units that work together with the nearby Nassau County Police Department. The department originally started with 36 police officers, who were issued six-shot revolvers. Now, the LBPD has state-of-the-art equipment, including non-lethal weapons. The LBPD revoked its Motorcycle Unit in 1960 and revived it in 2005. It is currently used for the Traffic Unit and ceremonial details. In 2008, the Marine Unit was started. The jail is located inside Police Headquarters. In 2011, the Long Beach Police Department was featured on the television series Speeders.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

There is a constant in the average American imagination and taste, for which the past must be preserved and celebrated in full-scale authentic copy; a philosophy of immortality as duplication. It dominates the relation with the self, with the past, not infrequently with the present, always with History and, even, with the European tradition.
    Umberto Eco (b. 1932)

Books of natural history aim commonly to be hasty schedules, or inventories of God’s property, by some clerk. They do not in the least teach the divine view of nature, but the popular view, or rather the popular method of studying nature, and make haste to conduct the persevering pupil only into that dilemma where the professors always dwell.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
