Caves

The district contains numerous caves, including a site of archaeological interest at Nueva, and the Cueva Bolado (43°24′04″N 4°45′51″W / 43.40111°N 4.76417°W / 43.40111; -4.76417) near La Pereda which also contains ancient art as well as open passages.

There are also several significant 'wild' cave systems, including

  • the Bolugo-Caldueñín system under El Mazuco (the Río Belugas, which sinks at (43°22′45″N 4°51′03″W / 43.37917°N 4.85083°W / 43.37917; -4.85083) and resurges at 43°22′48″N 4°51′54″W / 43.38°N 4.865°W / 43.38; -4.865)
  • the Rales system (43°24′43″N 4°53′39″W / 43.41194°N 4.89417°W / 43.41194; -4.89417)
  • El Cuevón de Pruneda, near Purón (43°22′39″N 4°43′23″W / 43.3775°N 4.72306°W / 43.3775; -4.72306).

These systems were first systematically explored by speleologists from the Oxford University Cave Club and from Speleogroup.

In addition, it is suspected that there is a significant cave system underlying La Llosa de Viango.

Famous quotes containing the word caves:

After Buddha was dead, his shadow was still shown for centuries in a cave—a tremendous, gruesome shadow. God is dead; but given the way of man, there may still be caves for thousands of years in which his shadow will be shown.—And we—we still have to vanquish his shadow, too.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)

At eighteen our convictions are hills from which we look; at forty-five they are caves in which we hide.
    F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896–1940)

Full many a gem of purest ray serene,
The dark unfathom’d caves of ocean bear:
Full many a flower is born to blush unseen,
And waste its sweetness on the desert air.
    Thomas Gray (1716–1771)
