Family Background and Birth

Crown Prince Ju's mother, Empress Wei Zifu, eventually would be Emperor Wu's second wife. (She had gotten favor over his first wife, Empress Chen Jiao, after Chen was unable to bear Emperor Wu any children. Empress Chen was deposed in 130 BC.) She probably became a consort of his circa 139 BC. However, despite her favored status, she also did not bear him a son—Ju—until 128 BC. Only after she was able to bear this imperial heir was she created empress. Prince Ju was created crown prince in 122 BC, at age 6.

Famous quotes containing the words family, background and/or birth:

The law is equal before all of us; but we are not all equal before the law. Virtually there is one law for the rich and another for the poor, one law for the cunning and another for the simple, one law for the forceful and another for the feeble, one law for the ignorant and another for the learned, one law for the brave and another for the timid, and within family limits one law for the parent and no law at all for the child.
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)

... every experience in life enriches one’s background and should teach valuable lessons.
    Mary Barnett Gilson (1877–?)

Fashion is the most intense expression of the phenomenon of neomania, which has grown ever since the birth of capitalism. Neomania assumes that purchasing the new is the same as acquiring value.... If the purchase of a new garment coincides with the wearing out of an old one, then obviously there is no fashion. If a garment is worn beyond the moment of its natural replacement, there is pauperization. Fashion flourishes on surplus, when someone buys more than he or she needs.
    Stephen Bayley (b. 1951)
