List Of VFL/AFL Players Born Outside Of Australia

This is a list of players who have played at least one senior game in the Australian Football League (AFL), previously known as the Victorian Football League (VFL), who were born outside of Australia (including the Australian colonies prior to Federation). The first non-Australian-born players were Ivan Astruc (Fitzroy; born in Mauritius), George Hastings (Essendon; born in Ireland) and Henry McPetrie (Carlton; born in England), who each played for their respective clubs in round one of the inaugural VFL season in 1897. There are currently 13 AFL-listed players who have played at least one game for their clubs. Peter Bell (Fremantle and the Kangaroos; born in South Korea) holds the games record for a non-Australian-born player, having played 286 games between 1995 and 2008. Jim Stynes (Melbourne, born in Ireland) is the only non-Australian-born player to win a Brownlow Medal, and Alex Jesaulenko (Carlton and St Kilda; born in Austria) was the only non-Australian-born player named in the VFL/AFL Team of the Century.

Famous quotes containing the words list of, list, players, born and/or australia:

The advice of their elders to young men is very apt to be as unreal as a list of the hundred best books.
    Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. (1841–1935)

Thirty—the promise of a decade of loneliness, a thinning list of single men to know, a thinning brief-case of enthusiasm, thinning hair.
    F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896–1940)

The whole idea of image is so confused. On the one hand, Madison Avenue is worried about the image of the players in a tennis tour. On the other hand, sports events are often sponsored by the makers of junk food, beer, and cigarettes. What’s the message when an athlete who works at keeping her body fit is sponsored by a sugar-filled snack that does more harm than good?
    Martina Navratilova (b. 1956)

We must cultivate our own garden.... When man was put in the garden of Eden he was put there so that he should work, which proves that man was not born to rest.
    Voltaire [François Marie Arouet] (1694–1778)

It is very considerably smaller than Australia and British Somaliland put together. As things stand at present there is nothing much the Texans can do about this, and ... they are inclined to shy away from the subject in ordinary conversation, muttering defensively about the size of oranges.
Alex Atkinson, British humor writer. repr. In Present Laughter, ed. Alan Coren (1982)
