Listed below are the creatures that appear in "The Twelve Kingdoms" franchise.
- Genbu - A holy creature that resembles a large turtle that is as big as a small island. It carries a new ruler from Mount Hou to the kingdom and leaves a trail of clouds called a Zuiun.
- Hakuchi - A white bird that is kept in each one's palace. It cries twice in its lifetime: once when the ruler is crowned and once when the ruler dies.
- Hanjyuu - A half-beast that have a human form and an animal form. They can change between both forms at will. The Hanjyuu are intelligent as humans and are given lesser rights in some kingdoms.
- Hou-ou - A pair of black and yellow birds that are found in each kingdom. The Hou are male and the Ou are female.
- Kirin - A Kirin is a noble and holy animal that is bound to and chooses the ruler of each kingdom according to the will of Tentei: Emperor of Heaven. They resemble horses with an antler-like horn on their forehead.
- Seicho - A blue bird that is used to deliver a letter between the officials in court to the other kingdoms. The Seicho are notable for their ability to repeat the words dictated to them in the exact voice of the person sending the message.
- Youma - The Youma are creatures with supernatural powers. They are usually evil unless they are in the services of a Kirin. Any Youma in the services of a Kirin is called a Shirei.
- Hiso - A Youma that resembles a small rabbit.
- Isoku - A Youma that resembles a long-legged dog and are known to be clever.
- Kiki - A Youma that resembles a purple lanky dog.
- Kogou - A Youma that resembles a leopard with rusty fur in the manga and resembles a wolf in the anime. It is large enough for two people to ride on its back.
- Oumu - A Youma that resembles a parrot with brilliant plumage. The Oumu can be ripped apart to produce duplicates of them.
- Saikyo - A Youma that resembles a gray bison. It was sent by Kourin to attack Youko.
- Sanki - A Youma that resembles a weasel that can grow and shrink in size.
- Shohi - A Youma that resembles a three-tailed wolf.
- Tenken - A Youma that resembles a red wolf with the wings and beak of a bird.
- Toutetsu (The Black Kirin Arc) - A shapeshifing Youma.
- Youwa - A Youma that resembles a large baboon that are swift and agile jumpers.
- Kochou (1, 2, 7) - A Youma that resembles a large crow with horns. The Kochou come in two colors: brown and gray. A flock of them were often sent by Kourin to attack Youko.
- Hinman (2) - A water spirit Youma. Keiki and Kourin each own a Hinman. They are known to possess humans.
- Gouyu (2) - A Gouyu is a Youma that resembles a three-horned bison that can fly. It was sent by Kourin to attack Youko.
- Bafuku (4) - Bafuku is a Youma that has a body similar to a Behemoth, the face of an Oni, and the markings of a tiger. Youko slays a Bafuku in the Kingdom of Kou when it had been sent by Kourin.
- Jyouyou (8) - A Youma that lives in the sea and preys on other Youma. It resembles a large electrical sea serpent that can also fly.
- Chouyuu (9) - Chouyuu is a Youma that resembles a monkey with long arms and four ears. It was sent by Kourin to attack Youko.
- Kingen (9) - A Youma that resembles a flying chicken with sharp tail feathers. A flock of them were sent by Kourin to attack Youko.
- Kyuuki (28) - A Youma that resembles a two-tone gray tiger. Youko slays two of them when they attack the Rike where she was staying at the time.
- Youjyuu - The Youjyuu are a type of creatures that are not like the Youma and are mostly tamed by ordinary humans. These Youjyuu are referred to as Kijyuu.
- Kitsuryou - A Youjyuu that resembles a horse with an inverted zebra pattered, a red mane, and golden eyes.
- Moukyoku (18) - A Youjyuu that resembles a small snow leopard with hooves for hind feet.
- Rokushoku - A Youjyuu that resemmbles a large flying bird.
- Sansui - A Youjyuu that resembles a blue horse with horns, a white mane, and green eyes.
- Sekikuu - A Youjyuu that resembles a large bird with a long neck, pink and purple feathers, a greenish-blue stomach, and green eyes.
- Sekko - A Youjyuu that resembles a red liger.
- Suugu - A Youjyuu that resembles a white tiger with large neck muscles suited for combat, hard fur, and a long tail. The Suugu are rare and difficult to catch when they are found.
- Tenba - A Youjyuu that resembles a large winged dog.
