List Of Sony/ATV Music Publishing Artists

Sony/ATV Music Publishing is a music publishing company co-owned by The Michael Jackson Estate and Sony Music. The organisation was originally founded as Associated Television (ATV) in 1955 by Sir Lew Grade. In 1957, ATV acquired Pye Records as a wholly owned subsidiary. At the time, Pye Records was one of the three major record companies in the UK and accounted for the vast majority of music records sold in the country. The Searchers, The Kinks, Donovan, The Moody Blues, Mungo Jerry and Petula Clark were some of the artists whose music Pye Records released. ATV Music Publishing was then created to exploit and publish the catalogue of songs written by artists on the Pye Record label.

ATV Music Publishing and Pye Records were both at the forefront of the British music explosion in the 1960s. The businesses held contracts with several US companies, allowing them to manufacture and distribute records in the UK. ATV Music Publishing and Sir Grade acquired the rights to the Lennon–McCartney song catalogue, Northern Songs, in 1968. The catalogue featured every song written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney until The Beatles' split in 1971. Len Beadle, the company's head, signed up many songwriters and bought numerous song catalogues during this time period.

Grade's fortune began to dwindle as the 1980s approached and by the mid-1980s, ATV Music Publishing and Pye Records were both up for sale. The companies were bought by Australian businessman Robert Holmes à Court, who in turn sold them to Michael Jackson for $47.5 million in 1985. In 1995, Jackson agreed to merge the catalogue with Sony Music for $90 million and renamed it Sony/ATV Music Publishing. The company became the second largest music publisher in the world. Throughout the 2000's, Sony/ATV continued to purchase several smaller catalogues to expand its repertoire, including the Leiber and Stoller catalogue containing several Elvis songs. Famous Music, a music publishing business with a song catalogue of more than 125,000 songs including "Moon River" and "Footloose", was sold to Sony/ATV Music Publishing in 2007. The deal, sought by Viacom, included the hits of Eminem, Akon, Collective Soul, Jet, Linda Perry, Björk, Shakira and Beck.

In 2012, Sony/ATV won the EU approval to acquire EMI's catalogue from Citigroup, a deal that currently makes Sony/ATV Music Publishing the largest music catalogue in the world with the copyright to over 2,000,000 songs and annual revenues in excess of $1.26 billion. Estimations of the value of the catalogue range between $1.75 and $8 billion dollars.

Famous quotes containing the words list of, list, sony, music, publishing and/or artists:

Every morning I woke in dread, waiting for the day nurse to go on her rounds and announce from the list of names in her hand whether or not I was for shock treatment, the new and fashionable means of quieting people and of making them realize that orders are to be obeyed and floors are to be polished without anyone protesting and faces are to be made to be fixed into smiles and weeping is a crime.
    Janet Frame (b. 1924)

I made a list of things I have
    to remember and a list
of things I want to forget,
but I see they are the same list.
    Linda Pastan (b. 1932)

In the end we beat them with Levi 501 jeans. Seventy-two years of Communist indoctrination and propaganda was drowned out by a three-ounce Sony Walkman. A huge totalitarian system ... has been brought to its knees because nobody wants to wear Bulgarian shoes.... Now they’re lunch, and we’re number one on the planet.
    —P.J. (Patrick Jake)

The music stopp’d, and I stood still,
And found myself outside the Hill,
    Left alone against my will,
To go now limping as before,
And never hear of that country more!”
    Robert Browning (1812–1889)

While you continue to grow fatter and richer publishing your nauseating confectionery, I shall become a mole, digging here, rooting there, stirring up the whole rotten mess where life is hard, raw and ugly.
    Norman Reilly Raine (1895–1971)

Good artists exist simply in what they make, and consequently are perfectly uninteresting in what they are. A really great poet is the most unpoetical of all creatures. But inferior poets are absolutely fascinating. The worse their rhymes are, the more picturesque they look. The mere fact of having published a book of second-rate sonnets makes a man quite irresistible. He lives the poetry that he cannot write. The others write the poetry that they dare not realise.
    Oscar Wilde (1854–1900)
