List of Shrievalties

List Of Shrievalties

This is a list of the currently-existing offices of High Sheriffs in England and Wales and in Northern Ireland, along with some minor Sheriffdoms in existence.

The areas covered are the ceremonial counties of England, the preserved counties of Wales, and the administrative counties and county boroughs of Northern Ireland.

High Sheriffs are appointed by The Crown, based on a provided shortlist. The ceremony involves the Queen 'pricking' the names of the selected candidates, a custom dated to Elizabeth I.

In the ceremonial counties that fall wholly or partially within the boundaries of the historic county palatine of Lancaster - Lancashire, Greater Manchester, and Merseyside (before 1974 the administrative county of Lancashire), a different process is followed. The High Sheriffs are appointed by the Duke of Lancaster (who happens to be the Queen, but she does not act in her capacity as Queen) at a different ceremony . Similarly, in Cornwall, they are appointed by the Duke of Cornwall (currently Prince Charles).

In Scotland the office of Sheriff has remained an actual judicial office. Sheriffs preside over sheriff courts. There is one Sheriff Principal for each of the 6 sheriffdoms in Scotland.

Famous quotes containing the words list of and/or list:

Feminism is an entire world view or gestalt, not just a laundry list of women’s issues.
    Charlotte Bunch (b. 1944)

I am opposed to writing about the private lives of living authors and psychoanalyzing them while they are alive. Criticism is getting all mixed up with a combination of the Junior F.B.I.- men, discards from Freud and Jung and a sort of Columnist peep- hole and missing laundry list school.... Every young English professor sees gold in them dirty sheets now. Imagine what they can do with the soiled sheets of four legal beds by the same writer and you can see why their tongues are slavering.
    Ernest Hemingway (1899–1961)
