When a group of boys accidentally stumbles on Gisborne's weapons testing site, all but one is taken prisoner. When the alarm is raised, Robin hatches a plan. With Gisborne armed to the hilt in an indestructible suit of armour, a rescue attempt is more difficult than it might first appear. Robin must think fast if he is to save a boy's life and stop a vital part of the Sheriff's war machine.

Marian wakes up in Sherwood Forest on the first day of the rest of her life as an outlaw with Robin and his gang. Surprising everyone with a new energy and recklessness, however, she jeopardises the gang's mission to bring aid to Clun Village after it's ransacked by the Sheriff's men. Meanwhile, the Sheriff has hired a lethal assassin with a personal grudge against Robin to kill him.

A messenger from King Richard seeks Robin at Locksley Manor but flees when he finds Guy there instead. He ends up falling from a tree in Sherwood Forest, where Robin hears his cryptic dying word, "Lardner," and learns that King Richard wants him to return to the Holy Land.

Tormented by nightmares about Robin, the Sheriff finds himself sleepwalking straight into Sherwood Forest on the very day that Prince John's messenger arrives to check all is well. Gisborne asks Robin to track down the missing Sheriff; the Sheriff, however, is intent on getting the Pact of Nottingham back. Finding the Sheriff absent and presuming him killed, the messenger summons Prince John's army and prepares to raze the town to the ground at sunset. The outlaws and Gisborne must now work together to find the Sheriff if they are to save Nottingham and themselves.

The King's guard Legrand arrives with a vital mission for Robin. As Robin joins the quest to unravel the coded clues leading to the mysterious Thesaurus Patriae, Marian decides to act alone in helping the Locksley villagers, only for Gisborne to finally unmask her as the Nightwatchman. The Sheriff is hunting the Thesaurus Patriae, too. Everyone's in for a surprise when King Richard's treasure turns out to be neither gold nor jewellery, but something much more personal.

The Sheriff and Gisbourne trap Robin Hood and his gang whilst they are about to celebrate Robin's birthday. With Robin seemingly out of the way, the Sheriff and Gisbourne, with Allan and a captive Marian in tow, depart for the Holy Land to kill the King.
