Pre-20th century

  • Juan Ponce de León,
    Ponce de León lived with his family in Puerto Rico. He was a Spanish explorer and conquistador who became the first Governor of Puerto Rico by appointment of the Spanish crown. He led the first European expedition to Florida, which he named. His remains are buried in a crypt in the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

  • Luis A. Ferré,
    3rd elected governor of Puerto Rico from 1969 to 1973. (see also Industrialists).
  • Rafael Hernández Colón,

  • Juan Bernardo Huyke,
    He was the second Puerto Rican native to serve as temporary Governor of Puerto Rico. In 1923, he served as interim governor between the administrations of Emmet Montgomery Reily and Horace Mann Towner.
