List of Political Parties in Sri Lanka

This article lists political parties in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka has a two-party system, which means that there are two dominant political parties, with difficulty for anybody to achieve electoral success under the banner of any other party. In the last decades, the United National Party and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party have been the largest parties by far. The general rule, however, has become coalition politics, since neither SLFP nor UNP are able to gather parliamentary majorities. Tamil areas are generally dominated by Tamil parties.

Famous quotes containing the words list of, list, political and/or parties:

The advice of their elders to young men is very apt to be as unreal as a list of the hundred best books.

    Shea—they call him Scholar Jack—
Went down the list of the dead.
    Officers, seamen, gunners, marines,
The crews of the gig and yawl,
The bearded man and the lad in his teens,
    Carpenters, coal-passers—all.
    Joseph I. C. Clarke (1846–1925)

Genocide begins, however improbably, in the conviction that classes of biological distinction indisputably sanction social and political discrimination.
    Andrea Dworkin (b. 1946)

Like other parties of the kind, it was first silent, then talky, then argumentative, then disputatious, then unintelligible, then altogethery, then inarticulate, and then drunk. When we had reached the last step of this glorious ladder, it was difficult to get down again without stumbling.
    George Gordon Noel Byron (1788–1824)
